Summary:Worth Consideration If You're Willing to Spend Time on the "Look"
Cost Info:No Free Option. Tiered Pricing Structure.
Pros:User Friendly, Customizable
Cons:Admin tools not as user friendly and didn't appear to work properly with some web browsers, Lacking some advanced features
SocialGO was established in 2007 in London and later added an office in Silicon Valley. A maturing offering, it made our "list of considerables" before failing to make the final three. It offers a robust array of features, even in the free version, though some may find they require some of premium features (like the ability to utilize your own domain name). It provides all of the most requested features (Forums, SubGroups, Photos and Events) though Polls are strangely missing. There were a handful of factors that dropped it from our consideration:
- No ability to create recurring events
- No ability to subscribe to a forum (only individual topics)
- Apparent issues with how some features (like the admin menu) display and operate in FireFox
- Limited ability to create the visual/layout experience we wanted without moving up to a premium account
Apart from these issues, SocialGO gets the job done and might be a very solid candidate for those with either less extensive needs or those willing to pay for premium accounts.
Significant Feature Notes
General – User friendly, tab-based navigation. User profile provides view for all user-centric data in one location, including subgroup information. Features the ability to sign in with Facebook login.
Admin - Ability to add RSS news feeds to a news tab. API Key and ability to export network data to .csv file. Administration tool bar appears to have issues in Firefox. Some other features could use refinement (i.e. clicking on emoticon selection in forums re-sizes entire browser window). Some role based permission settings. Ability to create custom profile questions for users.
Resources - Limited widgets available for purchase to expand features of site. Solid tutorial and support information including forums.
Pricing - tiered: No Free Option. Premium (your advertising instead of SocialGO's, expanded layout features, unlimited storage/bandwidth) & Concierge plans (white label, setup and design features, member billing)
Layout - Ability to modify tab titles, order and visibility based on user status (i.e. logged in or not). Modify colors and choose basic templates. Customize which basic widgets appear on home page. (i.e. latest forum posts, etc.) Significant additional features available with premium account including drag and drop layout editor and ability to add text and metadata to individual pages. Themes available for purchase.
Forums - Ability to quote or create new topic by quoting a previous post with one click
Events - Can be public/private, include photos, map location, track attendance, or create event within subgroup. Cannot answer "maybe" in RSVP, enter end date/time for event, or create recurring events.
Groups – Fully featured including own member list, forums, activity stream, events, photos, videos, and wall.
